Biographical history

Elise Agnes Corbet (nee Elliott) was born on June 5, 1926, in Liverpool, England, and passed away on May 12, 1996, in her home in Calgary at the age of 70. She immigrated to Canada in 1940 during the Second World War and later served in the Women's Royal Naval Service. In 1956, she married James Blakely Corbet, a Calgary lawyer, and they had one son, James Blakely Corbet.

Elise's involvement in historical research began in earnest after her husband's passing in 1971. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Calgary in 1975 and followed it with a Master's Degree in History in 1979. Her thesis was titled Alberta women in the 1920's : An inquiry into four aspects of their lives.

Throughout her career, Elise authored numerous articles and publications, delving into various aspects of Alberta's history. Notable works include the books Frontiers of Medicine : A History of Medical Education and Research at the University of Alberta (1990), Winter Sports in the West (with A. W. Rasporich, 1990), Breaking New Ground : A Century of Farm Equipment Manufacturing on the Canadian Prairies (with Don Wetherell, 1993), and Look to the Spine : The History of Chiropractic in Alberta (1995). Elise worked as a contract historical researcher, and also ran a historical tour business for several years.

Elise was deeply committed to preserving Alberta's heritage and held leadership roles in several historical organizations, including serving as President of the Chinook Country Historical Society, Chairman of both the Historical Society of Alberta and the City of Calgary Heritage Advisory Board, and a director and vice-chairman of the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation. She also contributed her time to various efforts, including the Riverside Villa Association and the Calgary Women's Literary Club.
