              RCAF Navigator's Log Book, with related annotated navigational maps, a training booklet, blank instructor's report (Rivers, Manitoba), group graduation photograph, 6 November, 44-29 march 1945 (1 CNS, Rivers, Manitoba) enclosed within folio folder with official stamping.
              The group photograph has most of the navigators identified, with the same handwriting. The maps are restricted use only, Wartime Training maps "Air Navigation Edition" which show RCAF training facilities, with overly navigational grids. Some maps are annotated and include hand-written navigational markings.
              Maps include: Indian Head - Brandon, Winnipeg, Winnipeg - Brandon, Brandon - Winnipeg, Neepawa -Gypsumville.
              RCAF Station Rivers originally opened in May 1942 under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan as No. 1 Air Navigation School (No. 1ANS). As the war progressed, RCAF Station Rivers also became a training center for Army pilots and parachutists as well as flying instructors from the Army, RCN and RCAF. Additionally, the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and the Air Dispatch School made Rivers their home.

              A book of financial records, written primarily in pen with some additions in pencil. Pages are labelled, and titles include "co-op," "car + truck gas," "telephone," Hardware," "Help," "machine repair," etc. Laid-in before the front page are two more pages labelled "Expense schedule" and "Income 1951." A smaller page titled "Proceeds of Wheat Sold" lists years from 1901-1915 with corresponding dollar amounts and a list of names. A cut-out section from a newspaper shows the "Street Price" of rye and flax in Manitoba and Saskatchewan from February 25 - March 1, 1952. An additional page laid-in between pages 51-52 of the ledger lists figures comparing "I want" to "Hon(?) wants" with further equations on the verso.

              A book of financial records for the McFadden family farm near Rivers, Manitoba, dated 1929-1932. An index was started on the first page but not completed, and only contains an entry for "Balance sheet 1929" on pages 2-3. Tabs have been cut into the top edge of some pages and labels written in for easy reference. Section titles include "B. Smith, Gas, Oil," "General Acct.," "Livestock," "Grain Seed," etc. "Diary" sections record primarily weather conditions and some family events. A variety of detached materials are placed throughout the book including receipts, an unused envelope (bearing a half-written name or title), a newspaper clipping with livestock registration and sale information, a small calendar for the month of May 1933, an invitation to a church event (duplicates), a poem, and additional pages with supplemental calculations and accounts.

              A hardcover journal containing farming financial accounts from 1949. Some pages have handmade tabs for easier navigation, with topics including "Bank," "B Smith," "Grain," "Stock," etc. Receipts for wages paid to Norman Murray, W. H. Rice (x2), and Steve Boss are stapled or paperclipped to the top edges of pages 19 and 70, as well as a newspaper article titled "Fertilizer Pays Off On Manitoba Farms" on page 50.

              A letter from John Mitchell, Professor of Soils at the University of Saskatchewan to Don McFadden, dated July 20, 1951. It contains the results of an analysis on three soil samples, the most important of which, according to Prof. Mitchell, are the clay texture and the presence of free lime, as well as his suggestions on how to make the soil more productive. The letter includes a personal note at the bottom about a recent trip and a violin gift from Uncle Bill. The attached second page contains the analysis results in numerical values.

              A child’s passport for Expo 67 in Montreal, Quebec. On the cover, it reads “Passeport Pour la Terre Des Hommes” which translates to “Passport to Man and His World.” The passport belonged to Bruce McFadden from Rivers, Manitoba. Bruce would have been nine years old at the time of the expo. The price for the passport is marked as $6.00. On the first page of the passport is a short note about the expo and the remaining pages are full of ink stamps from the various country pavilions.

              A pamphlet titled “Matling Barley Production in Manitoba” which is a written copy of an address given by D.J. McFadden from River, Manitoba. The address was given on March 30, 1954, at the Annual Banquet for the Winners of the National Barley Contest, which was held at the Prince Edward Hotel in Brandon, Manitoba. The pamphlet was published by the Barley Improvement Institute. The introduction of the pamphlet was written by Dr. T.J. Harrison, Director of the Barley Improvement Institute. The address outlines Donald McFadden's experiences with barley production and what led to his winning the contest. The pamphlet includes a few B&W photographs of the McFadden farm and Donald McFadden, himself.

Pages 15 and 37 are marked with handwritten notes "Sample Only - Used at A.H.S. 1951/52" and "Not D.J.M. - AHS - Sample Only" respectively, while pages 23 and 38 are marked with handwritten notes "D.J.M.'s 1951 Acct's" and "D.J.M. Expenses 1951" respectively. Additionally, all but 2 of the first 9 pages [being pages 2 and 4] are crossed through with large X's marked in pencil.

              Envelope containing one Statement of Arrears issued by the Canadian Farm Loan Board regarding Chester McFadden's mortgage loan as at 31 March 1936, and one Extension Agreement between Chester McFadden and the Canadian Farm Loan Board regarding the same mortgage loan dated 19 January 1942. The Extension Agreement is signed by Chester McFadden, and Consent to the making of the agreement is signed by his wife, Margaret McFadden.

              Per the terms of the Extension Agreement, Chester McFadden is required to pay off the remainder of the mortgage loan "In Twenty (20) annual consecutive instalments ... commencing November 1st, 1942" after which the mortgage will be void.

              The panel was chaired by Mr. Stuart Lane and was comprised of three members, including Mr. Donald McFadden, farmer and educator, from Rivers, Manitoba, and two other men, identified as Mr. Johnson, farmer, of Abercrombie, Nova Scotia (formerly of Denmark) and Dr. High, educator, of the Ontario Agricultural College. The panel discusses what they believe are the necessary educational requirements for farming, and whether they believe those requirements are being met by current agricultural education programs in Canada.

              A collection of personal correspondence sent and received by Donald James McFadden between 1956 and 1960. Letters generally discuss updates on the lives of relatives, friends and acquaintances, such as the birth of Donald's son, Gordon, in February 1955; updates on his farming and turkey producing operation; and some discussion of his time with the Royal Canadian Navy Reserves.

              Of some note is a series of 2 satirical letters, dated 3 and 18 October 1956, regarding the unexpected pregnancy of the McFadden's dog "Grace Kelly" by "Taffy", a dog owned by another Rivers area family.

              This collection of personal correspondence additionally includes 1 business letter from the Royal Canadian Navy concerning Donald's promotion to the rank of Acting Lieutenant RCN(R) and advising him on the courses required for promotion to Lieutenant.

              Includes cheques made out by Donald McFadden between 14 January and 19 April 1952 to various businesses and individuals for amounts not exceeding $200. All cheques cleared and were returned as cancelled cheques.

              Records of adjustment payments from the CWB and of account sales with Manitoba Pool Elevators cover the period of 16 March 1951 to 20 December 1952 and record amounts of grains (wheat, oats, and barley) delivered by Donald McFadden, and the amount of payment received for them.

              Includes correspondence between Donald McFadden and various companies or agencies, including Canadian National Railways [CNR]; the Province of Manitoba's Department of Labour - Mechanical and Engineering Division and Department of Health and Public Welfare; and Maple Leaf Purity Mills Limited. The correspondence largely addresses losses suffered by Donald McFadden's turkey enterprise in 1959 due to an unexpected storm and subsequent insurance claims and settlements, as well as other general planning and correspondence regarding the turkey business.
